The Department was established in the year 2010 to provide academic training for prospective Engineers who will integrate the emerging principles of modern biology with other basic sciences and engineering to offer solutions for fundamental and applied problems in biology and medicine. The first coordinator of the Department was the late Dr. K. F. T. Olanlokun and was succeeded by Dr. I.K. Adegun. Dr. K.A. Akande was appointed as the first Acting Head of the Department in August 2012 followed by Dr. J.F. Opadiji in March, 2013. Dr. K.A. Akande was again appointed as the Acting Head of Department in August 2014, August 2015, August 2016 and August 2017 respectively. Dr M. O. Ibitoye was appointed to helm the affairs of the department in August 2018. Dr. Suleiman Abimbola Yahaya was appointed as the acting Head of Department in 2021 and he has been the head of the department till date.
The Department admitted seven (7) students into her B.Eng. programme (100 Level) during 2011/2012 academic session, twelve (12) students during the 2012/2013 academic session, fifteen (15) students during the 2013/2014 academic session, seventy four (74) students in 2014 /2015 academic session, forty four (44) students in the 2015/2016 academic session, eighty two (82) students in the 2016/2017 academic session, seventy-seven (77) students in the 2017/2018 academic session and fifty-two (52) Students in the 2018/2019 academic session. The department has been admitting students every academic calendar.
Candidates for admission into 100 Level of the B.Eng. degree in Biomedical Engineering must possess a minimum of five credits in Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or its equivalent, which must include English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Candidates for Direct Entry admission into 200 Level of the B.Eng. degree in Biomedical Engineering must possess at least five credits in Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or its equivalent, which must include English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. They must also possess GCE ‘A’ Level or its equivalent in Physics, Mathematics and Biology/Chemistry not below grade ‘C’ or OND/ND with a minimum of upper credit in Biomedical engineering or Electrical engineering or Chemical
engineering or Mechanical engineering.
Candidates for Direct Entry admission into 300 Level of the B.Eng. degree in Biomedical Engineering must possess at least five credits in SSCE or its equivalent, which must include English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. They must also possess HND with a minimum of upper credit in Biomedical engineering or Electrical engineering or Chemical engineering or Mechanical engineering.
Every candidate must take UTME subjects: English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry like for other engineering disciplines.
Remedial students of the University who passed remedial exams may be absorbed into 100 Level.
