The Department operates an academic programme, which leads to a B.Eng. degree at a duration of five academic sessions for students who gained admission through UTME; and four academic sessions for post A-level, ND with upper credit and three academic sessions for HND with upper credit direct entry.
The five-year programme is broken into nine semesters of residence and one semester of industrial attachment which extends into the long vacation of 400 Level. Each semester is usually fifteen teaching weeks long and instruction is by courses quantified into course credits. Lectures, tutorials, practical sessions and projects are organized during each semester and every student in the programme is expected to participate fully since the grading system reflects each aspect.
The Industrial Training aspect of the degree programme is divided into three parts. The first part is the Student Work Experience Program (SWEP) which holds at the end of the 200 Level session. During this programme, students are exposed to workshop practice and have a “hands-on” experience of
practical engineering. This serves as a channel for integrating entrepreneurial development and skill into the programme. The second and third parts are the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) I and II, which are to be taken during the long vacation at the end of 300 Level and Rain Semester of the 400 Level till the end of the long vacation respectively.
